PADANG TERAP: The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry has to date received renewable energy (RE) applications with a total installed capacity of 932 Megawatts (MW).
Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said all the projects, if implemented, would involve a total investment of RM7 billion.
He said to date RE supplies 243MW to the national power grid.
“The government is actively encouraging the RE sector, and there is wide scope for industry players, what is important is the abundance of raw materials,” he said after the ground-breaking of Malaysia’s first power plant powered by padi husks in Padang Kerasak, Naka here.
The RM106 million plant by Majunaka Eco Energy Sdn Bhd has a capacity of 9.95MW, and when completed in the middle of next year will supply about 7MW to the national grid.
Mahdzir said of the 932MW from the RE applications, 111MW will come from biogas with an expected investment of RM821 million, biomass (303MW, RM1.3 billion), minihydro (264MW, RM2.3 billion) and solar energy (252MW, RM2.6 billion).
Of the 243MW currently generated from RE, biogass contributes 11.7MW, biomass 55.9MW, minihydro 15.7MW and solar energy 160MW, with only 6.9MW, all from solar energy, generated in Kedah, he said. — Bernama
