RTD: Lower licence fees likely under new system

KEPALA BATAS: The Road Transport Department (RTD) expects the fees for car and motorcycle licences to go down following the new regulation

that a licence applicant need only sit for a single traffic law test.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the RTD would make some changes in the computer system before implementing the system for a single traffic law test.

“The RTD will implement the system as soon as possible for the convenience of all parties and I think the fee for driving

licences will be lower after this,” he told reporters after a One Community One RTD programme, at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Md, Penaga, here yesterday.

The RTD’s transformation programme, which aims to provide seamless services to the people in rural areas, was inaugurated by director-general of Public Service, Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal.

On Friday, the Ministry of Transport decided on a single traffic law exam for car and bike licence applicants.

Currently, those who wish to get a car or a motorcycle licence have to study the car and motorcycle modules separately, and have to sit for two separate tests.

Meanwhile, in another development, Ismail denied a report in a news portal saying four people were killed in Melaka after the car they were in was rammed by a car being pursued by RTD officials.

“The news published on the portal is a needless allegation against RTD,” he said.

Instead he said investigations found that four of the officers on patrol duty came across the accident and provided the necessary assistance while waiting for the police to arrive at the scene.

“The RTD headquarters has received a full report on the incident from the police and fire department in Melaka.

“They said there were no reports that the car involved in the accident was pursued by our enforcement,” he said.

In the incident, a family of four were killed when their car, a Perodua Kancil, was involved in an accident with two other cars at Kampung Bukit Gereja, Jalan Serkam Pantai, Merlimau, Melaka, on Friday evening. — Bernama
