SK Sungai Lemaus pupils excited going to school using boat

MIRI: Buying a boat, not a car, definitely makes good sense for the pupils of SK Sungai Lemaus, as they now frolic going to school by boat, thanks to the floods.

“It really is fun. How nice if we go by boat everyday and anytime we like, we can go down to the river for a swim,” said pupils of Changgai Dali longhouse in impish innocence.

“I hope our father will buy a boat soon instead of a car,” was heard in conversations during their brief boat ride to the school.

That was the uplifting scenario in SK Sungai Lemaus throughout the flood season from early this month. Their newfound happiness will be over once floodwaters recede but it’s a life-time of memories for the little ‘uns.

Their school is located in the interior of Niah – a two-hour drive from Miri city, and just walking distance from Changgai Dali longhouse to school.

“It is less than five minutes’ walk to the school,” Councillor Liew Nyegang from a nearby longhouse in this constituency, informed thesundaypost.

SK Sungai Lemaus was submerged in three feet of water, prompting the authorities to dispatch a boat to ferry the pupils to class.

The flood situation as of yesterday, according to Nyegang, was back to normal, with a little drizzle.

Meanwhile, SK Sungai Lemaus headmaster Sawing Kedit said they have 95 pupils, including 39 boarders.

Those using boat to school were all ‘day-scholars’, he added.
