Malaysia confirm to win a title at India Open GP Gold

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian badminton squad are confirmed to win a title at the India Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament after two national women’s doubles pairs marched into the finals tomorrow.

In the semi-final match today, Vivian Kah Mun Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, who are also the favourite in women’s doubles event, defeated third seeded Thailand’s pair, Puttita Supajirakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai 12-21, 21-16 and 21-13.

They will face compatriot Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho who beat host’s Gutta Jwala-Ashwini Ponnappa 21-16, 19-21 and 21-13 in another semi-final match.

Meantime, Malaysia’s sole representative in the mixed doubles event, Chan Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing failed to advance to the finals after losing 16-21, 12-21 to favourite Riky Widianto-Puspita Richi Dili of Indonesia.

The tournament offers cash prize totaling US$120,000 (RM432,060). — Bernama
