PUTRAJAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri G Palanivel said yesterday the meeting of 90 MIC division heads chaired by party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday is illegal.

He said the meeting was held in contravention of the provisions of the party constitution and, therefore, any decision made or resolution passed at the meeting would also be illegal and of no effect.

“As stated earlier, I had not called for or sanctioned any meeting of the MIC and requested any such meeting planned to be called off. However, the meeting had been proceeded with despite my request,” he said in a statement.

At a closed-door meeting that lasted over four hours last Saturday, which was chaired by Dr Subramaniam and attended by several other party leaders, 90 MIC division heads reportedly agreed unanimously that the Central Working Committee (CWC) for 2009-2013 be chosen to manage MIC in the interim period while waiting for a new CWC to be elected.

The MIC has 135 divisions throughout the country.  Palanivel said he was contemplating whether stern action needed to be taken against those responsible with regard to the meeting held.

He also said that he would be pursuing the MIC re-election matter with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

On Dec 5, the ROS ordered MIC to hold fresh elections for the three vice-president posts and 23 Central Working Committee seats within 90 days after finding irregularities in the elections held during the 68th MIC annual general meeting on Nov 30, 2013. — Bernama
