SIBU: A Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) man believes that dialogues with residents can help the council improve their services and management of this town.

Councilor Joseph Chieng said he recently conducted a session with residents of Zone 16, who raised several issues such as improvements to the road, traffic and drainage, as well as garbage management and other matters affecting their daily lives.

According to him, the SMC assigns councilors with a zone each. Chieng’s jurisdiction is Zone 16 encompassing Rejang Park, Berjaya Road, Merdeka Road, a section of Oya Road near Sibu Medical Specialist Centre and a part of Pedada Road near Muhibbah Food Court.

“The dialogue also involved representatives from Rejang Park Kindergarten and Bandaran No 4 Primary School. I have assured them that I would look in necessary upgrades,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, adding that he was accompanied by SMC engineer Tony Wong, who addressed technical issues raised during the programme.

Chieng said the representatives from the kindergarten hoped that SMC would put up clearer signboards to indicate roads leading to the kindergarten would be turned into a one-way traffic from 7.30am to 8.30am.

“They said without any proper sign, it had been confusing for the drivers. As such, we shall set up some signs at Brooke Drive Lanes 6 and 12,” he said.

Other requests included proposed construction of speed bumps on roads near the kindergarten, filling up of potholes and putting a stop to illegal rubbish dumping outside the pre-school.

“For the speed bumps, I advise the kindergarten to write in to SMC while on illegal rubbish dumping, I call on the residents to stop doing so.

“However on the potholes, it is the task of the management of the kindergarten as they (potholes) are within its property.”

On Bandaran No 4 Primary School, Chieng said it requested for help to repair the plank walkway as well as to have a large rubbish bin outside the school.

“It also asks for help in clearing the blocked drains outside the building, easing the heavy traffic after school and disposing of scrap materials outside a car repair shop near the school.

“I will look into these requests. On the request for the rubbish bin, the school can write to SMC.”
