KOTA KINABALU: Likas assemblyman Junz Wong has expressed shock over the news by State Health Director, Dr Christina Rundi that Likas has been declared a dengue zone.

In a statement issued yesterday, he said he was sad and disappointed at the news and urged both local authorities, City Hall and the community to work together to make Likas a dengue free neighbourhood.

He said that Likas, with its wetland status, would apparently need extra care by both residents and local authority. There was no excuse for everyone involved not to play their parts responsibly to ensure Likas remained safe and healthy for everyone.

“On the authority part, I urge City Hall to step up their efforts to ensure that mosquito fogging exercises reach every Taman especially those areas with many natural trees and rivers.

“Enforcement must clean up the drainages to ensure good flow with no blockage, which has caused stagnant water – one main reason why mosquitoes can breed easily! Tall grass and untrimmed trees are also among the best conditions for mosquito breeding and thus City Hall enforcement should inspect and ensure that the grass is cut regularly in order to help cope with the dengue situation,” Junz advised

Junz, who is also Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sabah Organizing Secretary said that on the residents part, they should not litter even if it is just a tissue.

Not only that, but the public should also inform the authority if anyone was spotted and caught red-handed littering irresponsibly especially into drains.

“Tell them off immediately as they are causing huge danger to the society by helping the cause of mosquito breeding,” he stressed.

He emphasized that Likas is an area packed with schools and thus our children will be exposed to such danger and they are vulnerable.

He called on everyone to play their part to ensure that Likas becomes a dengue free zone sooner rather than later.

“My political secretary Nicholas Chak will submit an official report to City Hall on which are the areas needing extra if not immediate action to rectify the dengue situation.

“Please do no hesitate to contact us at 012-874 1336 or email us at [email protected] the addresses, relevant details, photos, etc if you want us to enclose your concerns into our report pertaining the dengue issue.

“We will do our best to ensure Likas remains a safe and healthy place for everyone,” Junz concluded.
