Man gets 10 years’ jail for two robberies

KUCHING: A jobless man was sentenced a total of 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in a Sessions Court to committing two robberies last year.

Thomas Joseph received five years’ jail for each offence, but the five jail terms were to run concurrently. The custodial sentence took effect immediately.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad convicted Thomas under Section 393 of the Penal Code which provides for up to 14 years’ imprisonment, fine or whipping upon conviction.

Thomas, 19, from Taman Palma here was guilty of stealing two mobile phones from two victims in front of a house at RPR Taman Sri Harmoni, Matang around 8pm on Aug 9 last year.

The accused has other crime prosecution cases pending in several courts.

He was initially arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Kota Sentosa. The arrest was made on Jan 5 this year and he was remanded for seven days.

He was released without the murder charge being framed against him.

Thomas was however charged with robbery and he pleaded guilty to two of the charges yesterday.
