KUCHING: The nude and decomposed body of a man, who went missing five days earlier, was discovered yesterday at the edge of a secondary jungle at Mile 9 Kuching-Serian Road.

The deceased was identified as Garriet Moset, 33, of Kampung Semadang at Mile 24 Penrissen Road.

His badly-decomposed body was found around 11am near Taman Emas by family members, who had been searching for him non-stop since he disappeared last Thursday.

Samarahan district police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern, who confirmed the case, said initial information gathered from Garriet’s father indicated the deceased had been suffering from leptospirosis.

“The father had initially sent the deceased to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) last week for treatment for leptospirosis, but the latter escaped from the hospital and made his way back home.

“On Jan 22, the father decided once more to send his son to SGH as his condition worsened but, midway into their journey, the latter bolted from his father’s car when it came to a halt at Taman Emas and vanished into the secondary jungle.”

Lee said the family lodged a missing person’s report soon after and began searching for Garriet without success.

He said when the family discovered the body, it was in a nude state and highly decomposed.

“Initial investigation by police found no apparent signs of foul play, and the case has been classified as sudden death,” added Lee.

A fellow villager, meanwhile, disclosed that Garriet had gone missing from home about two weeks ago after complaining that he was “bothered by evil spirits”, but was located by his family.
