National Security Council Sarawak secretary Addyhanis Ahamad yesterday hands over to Bintulu Deputy Resident Richard Michael Abunawas (centre) life jackets for flood relief efforts in the Division. Life jackets were also distributed in Limbang, Miri, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Kapit and Mukah.

KUCHING: Only four flood evacuation centres remained opened as at 4pm yesterday, with Bintulu still suffering from rising waters.

There were three active evacuation centres in Bintulu, housing 964 evacuees from 280 families.

One evacuation in Miri was housing 11 evacuees from four families.

A State Ops Room spokesman hoped the situation would improve further today so that the flood victims could return home.

On how long the state would stay on flood alert, the spokesperson said it depended on the weather conditions, which had seemingly improved significantly in the past two days.

However, members of the public, especially those in affected areas, are advised to remain vigilant.

Among agencies involved in the State Disaster Management Committee are the army, police, Fire and Rescue Department, and Civil Defence Department (JPAM).
