SIBU: Sibu Ping Pong Association (SPPA) is drawing up a special incentives scheme for players who show good moral character and discipline.

Its chairman Dr Clement Chen said outstanding play was not a factor “so long as the players have good character, train hard and show commitment towards the sport.”

Addressing the gathering ‘Sibu Ping Pong Night’ here recently, he said the incentives might include sending the players for friendly tournaments for exposure and experience.

The association is also hoping to organise a two-day training camp for the players at a retreat in Ulu Oya Road in the second half of the year.

“Special speakers and coaches will also be invited to conduct the training camp,” he said.

On the Sarawak Table Tennis Championship held in Sarikei in Dec, Chen was satisfied with the performance of the Sibu Division team.

“Our supporters at the tournament had also been great. This is the kind of team spirit that ought to be nurtured and maintained,” he said.

“From the Sarikei championship, I’ve learnt that happiness is in the state of mind and that a good athlete should never give up the pursuit for glory.”

It was thios belief, he shared, which enabled him to beat his opponents in the Men’s Veteran category in the quarter-finals.
