MIRI: Canopies are being erected along the High Street in preparation for the 13th Gong Xi Bazaar 2015.

Jointly organised by Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) and Miri City Council (MCC), the annual bazaar held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year (CNY) is a most awaited event, especially among the business community in the city. Co-chairman of the bazaar working committee, Lee Khoi Yun said the bazaar would be held from Feb 13 to 18.

“It will open to the public from 8am until night everyday but on the last day on Feb 18, it will only open until 12 noon,” Lee said at a press conference after chairing the final main committee meeting for the bazaar yesterday.

Communications Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin will be guest of honour to launch the bazaar at the car park in front of Miri Resident’s office by 8pm on Feb 15.

This year the number of participating stall is the same as the previous year at 260 stalls, out of which some 60 are Bumiputera stalls. The bazaar is a one-stop centre for the public, particularly the Chinese community, to buy everything they need for the Chinese New Year. Items include decorative, potted plants, food and drinks, handicraft, paintings and clothes. The bazaar is listed in Miri’s annual Calendar of Events.

The council will collect rubbish from the bazaar daily and its public health section will monitor the hygiene of its food and drinks. There will be daily entertainment from 7pm to 11.30pm to showcase the rich tradition and culture of the Chinese community.
