LAWAS: Lawas police yesterday arrested a 50-year-old suspect and seized a stolen 4WD vehicle and collared a suspected drug pusher with over 4gms of Syabu within an hour.

A routine police patrol led to the arrest and seizure of a Toyota Hilux twin-cab parked in front of a shop here at about 10pm after a check revealed that it was reported stolen in Miri two years ago.

The suspect from Ulu Baram has been detained under police custody to facilitate investigation in a follow-up on the stolen vehicle reported missing in 2013.

The case is investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, an offence punishable with imprisonment between one and seven years and liable to a fine upon court conviction.

The success of Lawas police against vehicle thefts comes on the back of the crippling of a theft syndicate last month, which used an oil palm plantation as a transit point and centre for cannibalizing parts.

In another case, Lawas police arrested a 23-year-old local suspect at Jalan Masjid for possession of 28 straws of items suspected to be Syabu.

The arresting party recovered 20 straws of pink, two light blue and six light green straws of crystalline substance inside a ‘Fute Jia’ sling bag of the suspect.

Newly-minted Lawas OCPD DSP Abang Zainal Abang Abidin has led the charge against crime against theft, drugs, cyber-gambling and other illicit activities in the district.

He confirmed the arrest of the two suspects in Lawas, saying that the Lawas Traffic Police came across the suspicious 4WD vehicle parked in front of a shop in town at about 10am.

DSP Abang said in the drug bust case, the suspect was nabbed behind a workshop and found in possession of drugs suspected to be Syabu.

The suspect was also tested positive for amphetamine and has been detained at Lawas Police Station for investigation under Section 12(2) of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
