KUCHING: Police are on the lookout for individuals who misuse their logo as it is an offence under the Police Act.

According to Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek, the operation was carried out from time to time to catch culprits illegally displaying the logo on the windscreens or registration plates of vehicles.

“This is an offence and I urge those with police logos to remove them to avoid trouble with the authority,” Roslan said when met after attending the monthly gathering in

Kuching District Police Headquarters at Simpang Tiga yesterday.

He said those found possessing such items or selling them without permit would also face the law as it might lead to crimes.

“An individual was recently charged in court for possessing a police uniform – an offence under Section 170 of the Police Act,” he added.

On another matter, Roslan revealed that the crime index for 2014 dropped 18.4 per cent from 2013.

“We recorded a decrease of 18.4 per cent – a drop for the fourth consecutive year. With 499 cases less, it has passed the outlined National Key Result Area (NKRA) set by the government of five per cent decrease in crime annually,”

He said most vehicle thefts were committed by youths, with 60 motorcycles stolen this month alone.

“We urge motorcycle owners to be careful not to leave the keys in the ignition,” said Roslan.

Last year alone, police collected over 500 motorcycle keys left in the ignition, before returning them to their owners.

Roslan presented certificates to outstanding police officers and certificates of acknowledgement to several members of the public involved in community policing at the event.

Also present was Kuching District deputy police chief Supt Fauzilan Abd Aziz.
