MARUDI: The Roman Catholic Church of Good Shepherd Marudi will receive a minor rural project grant of RM20,000.

Baram Member of Parliament Anyi Ngau announced the grant during the launching of the church’s bell tower yesterday.

In his speech, Anyi stressed that Christians in Sarawak are free to use the word ‘Allah’ to refer to God.

“Sarawakians can used the word ‘Allah’. This assurance came from our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem recently. This commitment is really clear as the assurance came from him,” he said.

Anyi reminded the community of the importance of education for a better life.

Meanwhile, priest in charge Father Basir Entili thanked the government for the assistance with funding.

“Though the church is totally not involved in politics, the assistance given by the BN (Barisan Nasional) government is very much appreciated,” he said.

The bell tower costing RM68,000 houses an RM10,000 bell donated by Louis Tadong, who works offshore.
