Pakan inundated

SARIKEI : Intermittent rain over the past few days have caused several areas in Pakan District to be inundated by floods since early this morning.

Julau District Police chief, DSP Bidol Noyeng when contacted today said that three longhouses, three schools and Nanga Wak Bazaar were still several feet under water, prompting the District Disaster Relief and Management to evacuate the affected residents to Pakan Community Hall.

“As at 4 pm today, 40 affected residents comprising 30 from Rumah Jabang, seven from Rumah Jampong and three from Nanga Wak Bazaar area have been evacuated.

Several sections of road were about three feet under water and were rendered impassable to small vehicles, he said, adding road access to Rumah Empati, Nanga Marau through Pakan/Wak Road was cut off.

Continuous rain had also triggered a landslide at Mile 9 Jalan Pakan/Engkamop, he said, adding that it had been cleared by relevant authorities.

The District Disaster Management and Relief Committee headed by Pakan District Officer, Alex Liaw continued to closely monitor the situation.

Bidol advised residents in low-lying areas to stay alert at all times and not to hesitate to contact the authorities if they noticed water rising in their areas.

They had rescue workers from the fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba) , Civil Defence Department and the Police stationed in Julau and Pakan to assist the victims, he assured.
