KAPIT: The Kapit District Disaster Management Committee has received another thumbs-up on Saturday for the speedy way they helped 21 Rumah Guyah folk seek shelter at Asrama Belia KPS when their longhouse collapsed on Friday.

Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Jefferson Jamit, said, “I applaud the speedy action taken by the committee in finding temporary shelter for the affected folk. Their longhouse collapsed not due to landslide or soil erosion, but due to structural faults,” he said when he went to Asrama Belia KPS on Saturday.

While there, he gave RM1,000 to the Kemas (Community Development Department) staff-in-charge of mess cooking for the evacuees, Mala Sugit, to buy food for the evacuees.

Earlier on Saturday morning, committee chairman Elvis Didit and political secretary to the Chief Minister Wilson Nyabong also visited the evacuees.

Elvis said he was pleased with the way his committee members handled the incident, which occurred shortly before 5pm, leaving five families and a bachelor homeless.

These folk were from villages along Kanowit River, Baleh River and Rajang River.

Meanwhile, Wilson had also chipped in RM1,000 for buying of food for the evacuees.
