MIRI: It was a special day for some 380 new students of SMK Chung Hua Miri when they celebrated the end of their orientation programme and the start of the secondary school life.

Officiating at ceremony, Rita Ting, who represented the school board of director chairman Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Chai Yu Lan, said the event was a salient feature of Chung Hua’s unique culture.

The new Transition and Form One students had gone though a week of various co-curricular activities with zeal and youthful energy, and Ting congratulated the happy kids and told them to forge ahead with enthusiasm and aim to excel in everything that they would do, be they academics, sports. or any other extra-curricular activities.

Meanwhile, Ting noted with pride that the school’s PT3 achievement last year saw 50 students achieving seven or eight As.

“This should serve as a good exemplary accomplishment and an encouragement to our younger students and I am sure the aspiring youngsters will want to achieve the same or even better,” she said.

Chung Hua Miri was also recently the national runner-up in the Uniform Body category for 2013. The school Brass Band got distinction in the UK Trinity Music Examination in November 2013, for which an award-presentation ceremony will be held soon by the UK exam board. In sports, their ping-pong players were also the overall MSS tournament champion.

“All these achievements should inspire all the new comers to this school,” Ting said, adding that encouragement and support from their parents would also be equally important.

During the ceremonial event, Ting, accompanied by deputy chairman of school board of director Chai Min Kian, school alumni Lee Thin Hin and teachers, also presented awards to students who excelled in last year’s UPSR examination.
