KENINGAU: A local man suspected of shooting his younger brother using a homemade gun, was arrested by police within 27 hours after the incident at Kampung Sukong in Tambunan district yesterday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong told a press conference here yesterday that the police had tracked down the suspect who fled into a jungle after the incident on Sunday morning.

He said the 44-year-old suspect shot dead his younger brother, Ronnie Linus, 25, at Kampong Sukong Tambunan using a homemade firearm known as ‘Ginsuk’.

According to him, the Tambunan police station received a call from the public at 3.19am reporting that someone had been shot in the village.

He said acting on the information, police conducted investigation at the scene and found the body of a man with bloodstains at the scene.

“The body of the victim, who worked as a farmer and a bachelor, was clad only in short pants.

“The victim lived with his parents, an elder brother (suspect) and a three-year-old nephew. He was injured in the upper abdomen with five gunshot wounds that penetrated his body, leading to the belief that the victim was shot at close range,” he said.

Douglas added a community leader in the village reported that he had heard a gunshot at 2.54am while sleeping at home. He was then called by the victim’s father, who said that his son (the victim) had been shot dead by his eldest son and asked him to contact the police.

Douglas said further investigation found that there was an argument between the victim and the suspect during the incident, and the motive of the shooting was due to disputes and misunderstanding because both had just returned from a wedding feast in Kampung Timbou,Tambunan.

“According to the victim’s mother who was in the house, the victim had challenged the suspect who was outside the house to a fight. The victim then went out of the house and was shot by his brother. He died at the scene.

“The victim was suspected to have been shot by the suspect using a homemade Ginsuk gun. After shooting the victim, the suspect ran to the jungle in the village bringing the weapon with him,” he said, adding a spent bullet was found at the scene.

“A K9 Unit from Sabah police contingent was called in to help track down the suspect who fled into the forest in the village where he was hiding.

“The suspect was arrested by police from Tambunan at his house in the village at 9.40am today,” he said.

“During interrogation the suspect revealed that he had hidden the ‘ginsuk’ in the jungle,” he said.

Douglas said on the same day the suspect brought police into a hilly area in the village and showed them where he had hidden the weapon.

According to him, the suspect also claimed that he had made the ginsuk and bullets for hunting animals.

Douglas said the suspect would be remanded for 14 days for investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

He also said the victim’s body was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for post-mortem today.
