GEORGE TOWN: The police have uncovered a major syndicate which used ‘nasi kandar’ packets to hoodwink the authorities to supply heroin and Syabu to the addict population in northern states.

Last Thursday, the ‘nasi kandar’ business of the drug traffickers which operated for two years, came to an abrupt end.

A police team raided a drug processing laboratory and detained four people, including a married couple during an operation at a condominium in Sungai Pinang, and at a house in Jelutong here.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) and Penang Narcotics CID seized 152.3kg of heroin and 1.99kg of syabu worth about RM5 million.

He said the seized drugs could meet the demand of about 700,000 addicts.

“The syndicate was found to have packed the drugs as ‘packet nasi kandar’ to avoid detection by the authorities.”

He said the police also impounded five vehicles, including a Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen Beetle and Mitsubishi Attrage, as well as a Vespa belonging to a syndicate member.

“We also seized RM46,326.20 in cash and froze RM373,890.91 in their bank accounts. The overall value of vehicles and cash seized was RM792,717.11,” added Abdul Rahim. — Bernama
