SEPANG: A four-year hunt by the police has snared a man, his wife and their daughter who have preyed on people performing prayers at the surau of highway rest and service areas in the Klang Valley and a mall in Putrajaya.

The trio, going by the name of Bella Aziah, was nabbed at their house in Cheras last Thursday, Sepang Police chief ACP Mohd Yusof Awang said yesterday.

The arrest of the three, the couple in their 40s and their 23-year-old daughter, had enabled the police to solve 18 cases of theft at the surau of rest and service areas in the Klang Valley and also at the IOI Mall in Putrajaya, he added.

Mohd Yusof told a news conference that the woman and her daughter would pretend to go for prayers at the surau and steal the handbags of women while the man waited for them in a car.

“The police recovered about RM50,000 worth of goods such as smartphones, laptop computers, mobile telephone chargers, cameras, jewellery and watches,” he said, adding that they returned to steal again after selling off the stolen goods.

Mohd Yusof said the couple, who tested positive for drugs, and the daughter had been remanded for seven days up to today for investigation. — Bernama
