KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced a total of 21 months in jail after being convicted of two counts of impersonating a police officer as well as theft.

Fadliee Abu Bakar, 23, from Kampung Tengah Maludam, Sebuyau pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman, who ordered the sentence to take effect immediately.

He was convicted under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a police officer and Section 379 of the same Code for theft.

Fadliee was sentenced to six months in jail for each of the impersonation charges, which would run concurrently, and another 15 months’ imprisonment for theft.

In the first case, he approached an Indonesian man on his way to make a money transfer to his family at Jalan Market here at 8.20am on Dec 11 last year.

He pulled the man into a public toilet and claimed to be a policeman while conducting a body search.

Fadliee also checked the victim’s sling bag.

The victim only realised that his money totalling RM5,150 was missing after he reached the money transfer premises and lodged a police report.

In the second case, the complainant was standing in front of a shop at Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang last month when a man approached him and asked to look at his identity card.

Sensing something amiss, the man lodged a police report and this led to Fadliee being arrested at Jalan Gertak by a team from the Central Police Station.

Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted while the accused was not represented by counsel.
