MIRI: The Chinese New Year (CNY) festive mood prevailed during the 20th edition of the Hornbill Walk held at Piasau Nature Reserve on Feb 14 which was also Valentine’s Day.

Datuk Sebastian Ting, the chairman of Piasau Camp Miri Nature Park Society (PCMNPS), and exco members were among some 100 naturalists, comprising the young and old, taking part in the walk.

One of the strong supporters of the nature reserve, Annis Lee, single-handedly adorned trees and shrubs as well as house P58 with Valentine’s Day and Chinese New year decorative items.

She also used recycled red plastic wrappers of mandarin oranges to decorate the shrubs to heighten the celebration mood. This proved to be an attraction for the participants, who posed for photographs in front of
them.

To commemorate Valentine’s Day, Ting took the lead in exchanging gifts, giving roses to all the ladies including to the youngest participant Sophia.

Like in all the walks, papa hornbill Jimmy never failed to turn up especially near P58, where his soulmate, Juliet, is nestling two offspring.

Meanwhile, Ting who is also the secretary general of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) wished all Malaysians and citizens of other countries a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Recalling 2014, he said it was a year when Malaysia faced a lot of challenges and tragedies.

“Our country can withstand all the economic instability but we cannot afford to have racism issue.

“Hence, in 2015 Malaysians have to unite, in order to have a peaceful country as well as growth and stability.

“We have to welcome 2015 with full of hope as Malaysia is a country rich in resources which will be used to develop the country, and face challenges confronting the nation,” he said.
