KUCHING: Remember the name Muhd Haikal Zaidie. The 13-year-old is making waves in local muaythai circles.

He already has international experience under his belt. Last May, he won a silver medal at an international tournament in Langkawi organised by IFMA (International Federation of Muaythai Amateur).

Before he lost to a Russian in the final, he braved his way past more experienced international boxers.

Come Feb 28 Haikal will pit his skills as visitor against homester Danial Tugau at the Johor State Invitational Muaythai Championship to be held at the Johor Bahru Youth and Sports Complex, Jalan Ayer Molek, Johor Bahru.

The Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMS) is determined to provide a platform for the youngster to advance his career.

PMS secretary Hartika Abu Kassim told thesundaypost yesterday that Haikal has a bright future in the sport.

“At his age, he is definitely one of the best fighters in Sarawak. We hope that he has what it takes to become a top fighter in the country one day,” he said.

Meanwhile, Haikal’s club – the Kenyalang Muaythai Club – expressed their gratitude to PMS president Jumaat Ibrahim and the State Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) for supporting Haikal’s career.

“When we first met him, we know that we have an unpolished gem at our disposal.

“He has proven that we are right so far and we wish him all the best for his coming tournament,” the club spokesman revealed.
