Sandakan robbery, mugging suspect nabbed

SANDAKAN: A 21-year-old man from Pulau Gaya here got himself into double trouble when two police reports were lodged against him on February 18, for breaking into a house here and mugging a man with a stolen vehicle.

For the first report, the suspect allegedly broke into a house in Kampung Karamunting Baru, Jalan Batu Sapi here between February 17 and 18, where he stole an Isuzu D-Max four-wheel drive, an iPhone 4S, a watch, three credit cards and about RM100 worth of coins.

Acting district police chief Superintendent Fadzil Mohd Ali confirmed the case and disclosed that the suspect had removed the toilet glass window to enter the house during the wee hours when the residents were fast asleep.

He said that the suspect did not stop his criminal activities there as he later mugged a victim.

According to the facts of the case in the second report, after breaking into the house in Kampung Karamunting, the suspect had waited at the Mile 1, Labuk Road bus stop in the stolen Isuzu D-Max about 6.20am, pretending operating a private rental car. A man then entered the vehicle and requested to be sent to the market in Sandakan town.

The suspect however drove towards Sung Siew which raised the suspicion of the passenger.

He then requested for the suspect to stop at Sung Siew, but the latter told him that he was a policeman and had to inspect him for dangerous drugs.

The passenger jumped out of the vehicle and started to run. The suspect left the vehicle and started chasing the passenger.

A member of the public came to the assistance of the passenger but the suspect managed to steal his wallet and fled in the stolen vehicle.

Acting on the two police reports lodged against the suspect, the police arrested him on the same day at a factory here.

The Isuzu D-Max and other stolen items were recovered from the suspect.

The suspect was also tested positive for methamphetamine in a urine test.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

Fadzil said that the modus operandi of suspect was to break into homes through the toilet windows and he often targeted homes with single female occupants.
