KUCHING: A senior citizen was killed after the car he was travelling in collided with a heavy lorry at a cross junction at Jalan Pasir Pandak yesterday.

The deceased, identified as John Chong Shing Yong, 78, of Jalan Stampin, was in the front passenger seat of a Toyota car driven by his son when the accident occurred around 4pm.

Chong was pinned to his seat and firemen took about 15 minutes to extricate him from the wrecked car.

Medical personnel who checked him after being freed found he had succumbed to his injuries.

The son sustained minor injuries.

Traffic police are investigating the fatal crash.

In a separate accident, a woman sustained serious leg injuries after a motorcycle she was travelling on was struck by a car in Serian on Monday night.

The 23-year-old pillion rider was riding with her elder brother when they were hit from behind by a Toyota vehicle near the Road Transportation Department complex around 9pm.

Her brother escaped relatively unhurt.

The woman was brought to the Sarawak General Hospital here.
