MIRI: Police here will continue to carry out operations to stamp out illegal motorcycle racing.

Miri deputy police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said even though illegal motorcycle racing here is under control, the police will continue working together with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to monitor the situation.

“Marina Bay is where these Mat Rempit (illegal racers) always have their races, especially on weekends and holidays.

“We conducted a joint operation with JPJ on Feb 22 and arrested several individuals who were involved in it,” he said after launching a motorcycle tour expedition yesterday.

Stanley said Mat Rempit are usually school-leavers and youths aged between 18 and 26.

“Parents must not allow their children to ride motorcycles without a license because it will endanger themselves and other road users,” he said.

Meanwhile, Stanley said Ops Selamat Chinese New Year (CNY) from Feb 12-22 showed a 36 per cent decrease in accidents compared to last year’s operation.

A total of 80 accidents were recorded this year compared to 125 accidents last year.
