KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) to be held in Langkawi on March 15 will focus on the importance of ties between Asean member countries on security, sovereignty and international threats.

Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the issues to be discussed include the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS) militant group and their impact on Asean countries.

“The proposal to establishing a peacekeeping force among Asean countries will also be raised. We will also recommend that Asean countries involved in peacekeeping forces abroad to cooperate at soldier level,” he said after receiving a courtesy call by the Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Cho Byungjae and the Royal Brunei Navy Chief, First Admiral Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Mohd Tamit at Wisma Pertahanan, here yesterday.

ADMM will also create understanding among Asean soldiers via joint exercises and focus on cooperation in addressing issues relating to human disaster relief(HDR).

“As we all know, Asean coutries are not spared disasters that cause a lot of destruction and death. Cooperation of the 10 Asean member countries will help to coordinate the HDR work.”

Abdul Rahim also said the meeting with Cho and Abdul Aziz was to enhance cooperation and ties between Malaysia and Korea and Brunei.

“Brunei is an Asean member country while Korea is an Asean dialogue partner. Thus, the focus on enhancing cooperation is in accordance with the ADMM programme in Langkawi.”

Earlier, Abdul Aziz held a meeting with the Royal Malaysian Navy Chief, Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar, to enhance ties between the two navies. — Bernama
