MIRI: The crime index in Miri dropped by 19 per cent in the first two months of the year.

Last year, 188 cases were recorded from Jan 1 to Feb 25 but dropped to 153 cases for the same period this year.

Miri police chief, ACP Gan Tian Kee who released the statistics yesterday said the decline was due to the hard work of the police team and cooperation between police and the public.

Gan when contacted yesterday said the police would do their best to ensure the number would not go up by end of the year.

“They will continue to step up drug raids, re-organise our Mobile Patrol Unit (MPV), Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) and Crime Investigation Department (CID) to carry out more operations (Ops Cantas, Ops Pintu and roadblocks),” he said.

He noticed less violent crime, property and housebreaking this year.

Gan said the public can help police by providing information on criminals.

“The police will continue with Ops Samseng Jalanan and improve their response time,” he assured.

The cops aimed to clear black spot areas in Miri such as petrol stations, 24-hour mini market and hotels.

He called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Resident Committee (RC) to work closely with the police.
