Sibu futsal tournament caught in a net

SIBU: Pressure is mounting on organisers of the Sibu Open Starsport Futsal Championship originally scheduled for Feb 7-8 at the Bukit Lima Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

The tournament has been hit by postponements.

It has now surfaced that all was due to the absence of netting for the futsal court at the stadium.

Organising chairman Abdul Hajis Abdullah has decided to come clean by revealing that the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry (KPSU) have failed to provide for the net.

“Many teams have questioned the delay … with some teams having withdrawn from the event,” he lamented while pointing out that most teams which had withdrawn were from outstation.

The tournament is expected to set the stage for next month’s Sibu Futsal League.

The top two teams from the league will represent Sibu in the Sarawak Futsal Championship scheduled for April in Bintulu.

Hajis has appealed for withdrawn teams to re-consider coming back.

After all, handsome prizes sponsored by Lea Sports Centre await the winning teams who stand to collect RM500 plus vouchers worth RM1,500 (champion), RM300 plus vouchers worth RM1,000 (runner-up) and RM100 plus vouchers worth RM500 each (joint third).
