KOTA KINABALU: The public are advised not to believe or upload false information through social media such as Whatsapp and Facebook which can cause unnecessary confusion.

The advice came Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman who said sharing of false information through social media could also threaten peace and security in the country.

“We urge the public not to be easily influenced by information received through social media but to first check the authenticity from trusted authorities,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Jalaluddin was commenting on claims on social media 30 units of police uniform were stolen from a laundry in the state capital.

The message reads, “Astro Channel 301 Chinese News just announced that the case of 30 police uniforms being stolen from a Subang laundry is true”…claiming that the incident took place in Kota Kinabalu.

According to Jalaluddin, no such report was made or received in the state capital.

“The news or information (in Whatsapp) is not true and did not happen in Kota Kinabalu,” he confirmed.
