Police arrest 31 foreigners in george Town

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 31 foreigners from various countries were arrested by the police in an operation codenamed ‘Op Rantau’ in the Timur Laut District, here, early yesterday morning.

Timur Laut District police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said their ages ranged from 20 to 45 years old.

“The operation was held at two residential areas and two worker’s quarters (rumah kongsi). In the operation which began at 10pm last night, the police conducted checks on 164 foreigners of different nationalities in four separate locations,” he told reporters here, yesterday.

Upon inspection, the police found 31 foreigners comprising 21 Myanmar nationals, eight Bangladeshis and two Pakistanis did not have proper documents and their work permits had expired.

All of them were brought to the Northeast District police for further investigation before being handed over to the Penang Immigration Department for further action, Mior said.

“The police will continue to conduct the operation in future in its effort to curb the influx of foreigners without proper documents,” he said.

He said 63 police officers and personnel together with the State Immigration Department enforcement officers, the National Registration Department, the Civil Defence Department and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) were involved in the operation. — Bernama
