KUCHING: Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (Azam) is a communication organisation that is pro-active in organising activities that stress on the importance of social harmony.

Azam chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani said the organisation was made up of members and staff of diverse ethnic, social and professional backgrounds.

“This message on the importance of moderation is continuously integrated into many of Azam’s activities. For example, last year Azam organised an event that tried to educate our youths to ensure that our social harmony is not to be taken for granted and should be jealously guarded.

“This was done by having Sarawak youths share the positive experiences in social unity in Sarawak with their counterparts in West Malaysia through a joint programme with Yayasan 1Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Islamic Information Centre (IIC) and Sarawak Development Institute (SDI),” Morshidi said.

He said this in his speech on Saturday night at the Azam Gathering of members themed ‘Evergreen Azam – A Blast from the Past’ that was held at Grand Margherita Hotel.

Morshidi, who is State Secretary, added that Azam focused on working with their youths and motivating them as well as acknowledging their role in society over the past few years.

“However, a gathering like this, with a theme that highlights the yesteryears, is one simple way that we wish to acknowledge the contributions of the older generations. Many of Azam’s active members today are from the pioneering years of Azam and they are still committed to Azam today even in the era of Information Communication Technology and social media,” he said.

He also said that despite the small membership, most members were always ready to commit their time and expertise to a good cause.

“They are ready to commit time and expertise to provide meaningful input into our various programmes because of their passion to see Sarawak develop and prosper, and more recently we found that some of the older members are keen to be mentors to youths who are keen to join Azam,” Morshidi stated.

He also invited Azam members to follow Azam on Twitter (@azamsarawak), Facebook and Azam Online TV on Youtube to keep each other updated on happenings in the organisation.

Also present at the gathering was Azam’s membership and establishment committee chairman Safri Zainudin.
