KUCHING: A driver was killed on his first day at work after the one-tonne lorry he was driving crashed into another at Jalan Abell here yesterday.

Tan Kim Seng, 29, from Tabuan Desa, and his co-worker were pinned to theirs seat in the 2.30am incident.

Firefighters, who arrived at the scene minutes after receiving the distress call, took 17 minutes to extricate both victims from the vehicle.

Tan was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in an ambulance but was pronounced dead later.

His 37-year-old co-worker survived the crash but suffered from a fractured chin, internal injuries and fractures on both feet.

His condition remained unknown as at press time.

The co-worker’s wife arrived at SGH around 4am after being informed of the accident.

The mother-of-five said that she was very sad about the incident as it was just three days after their youngest six-month-old son was discharged after being admitted to the hospital due to lung infection.

“Now, my husband is here,” she lamented.
