KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a score of 2.49 in the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the 2014 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination, the highest it had achieved so far.

In 2013, the state recorded a CGPA of 2.43, while in 2012 it was 2.14, 2.09 in 2011 and 2.09 in 2010.

A total of 4,973 candidates sat for the 2014 STPM as compared to 6,184 in 2013. Out of the total, 4,966 candidates (99.86 per cent) were secondary school students while seven (0.14 per cent) were private candidates.

A total of 40 candidates (0.81 per cent) managed to score a CGPA of 4.0 as compared to 39 candidates (0.63 per cent) in 2013 while 1,187 candidates (23.9 per cent) achieved a CGPA of 3.0 and above in 2014 compared to 1,360 candidates (22.14 per cent) in 2013.

Yesterday, a total of 4,834 students or 97.63 per cent received their 2014 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) certificates as compared to 5,897 candidates (96 per cent) in 2013.

Out of the total, 26 candidates (0.52 per cent) passed in five subjects (5P), 2,956 candidates (59.52 per cent) passed in four subjects (4P), 936 candidates (18.85 per cent) obtained pass in three subjects (3P), 545 candidates (10.97 per cent) in two subjects (2P) and 371 candidates (7.47 per cent) in one subject (1P).

One of the high achievers when met at SMK St Joseph yesterday, Aifa Afilla Aidi who scored a CGPA of 3.75, said the result was something she had always been waiting for.

“I am extremely happy that I have eventually received good result as I always wanted to give back to my family as well as the teachers who had sacrificed their time by giving me the encouragement and drive to do my best for the examination,” said Aifa, who is planning to pursue finance and accountancy at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

She also said whenever she needed help in her studies especially in History and Economics, she would turn to her teachers as well as her elder sister who is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in a local university.

Another high achiever, Dayang Nur Azizah Abdul Razak, said she never expected to obtain a straight B with a CGPA of 2.8.

“I am so thankful as I had never expected the outcome to be this good, at least for me. I was such a rebellious student before. Nevertheless, with strong encouragement and guidance from the teachers who never gave up on me, I was able to perform my best,” she said.

On her next pursuit, Dayang said she hoped to get enrolled in Unimas and pursue her studies in courses dealing with Mathematics, such as Economics, Accountancy or Finance, as that had always been her passion.

“Although most regard studying in Form 6 as hard, with lots of studies and revisions to do, especially with four thick books to learn from, always focus on your studies and never give up. Teachers are there to guide you along the way, listen to them and their advice. Also having great confidence in yourself towards your studies is the best, especially for students like me,” said Dayang in giving her advice to current Form 6 students.

Meanwhile, a total of 42,854 students in Malaysia sat for the 2014 STPM examination, a decrease of 16.69 per cent as compared to 2013 when 55,223 candidates sat for the exam.

The Malaysian Examination Council (MEC) also announced yesterday that the national CGPA was 2.62, higher than the 2.57 in 2013.

According to MEC, private candidates will receive their 2014 STPM results through the post while other candidates can obtain theirs from their respective schools.

Candidates can also check the results via SMS by typing STPM RESULT>space>identity card number and send it to 15888 or by logging on to www.mpm.edu.my.

Candidates who wish to amend their personal particulars on their STPM examination may also do so within this week at the state Education Department headquarters in Jalan Diplomatik, Off Jalan Bako in Petra Jaya here.
