BELAGA: Constituents of Hulu Rajang benefited from a district-level community programme courtesy of the Kapit Health Department recently.

Program Latihan Komuniti Sihat Perkasa Negara (Kospen) was jointly held with the Kapit and Belaga Community Development (Kemas) and PRS Belaga Youth movement at Rumah Udau Tedong, Long Urun here last Saturday.

Kospen, explained Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kumbong, is a strategic initiative in community development under the purview of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

“It is part of the Health Department’s transformation programme that includes the engagement or participation of members of the community and various government agencies, particularly at the grassroots level,” said Ugak at the launching of the event.

The national-level Kospen was launched on Feb 13, 2014 at Kampung Kuala Paya, Segamat, Johor, and was launched in the state on March 8, 2014 at Rumah Bundong, Sungai Sebabai in Kapit.

Among its objectives are ensuring that the community is healthy and productive by practicing a healthy lifestyle as well as observing preventive measures against the risk of contracting various killer diseases, while also creating a pool of volunteers as prime movers of this community-linked project.

Four villages were selected to take part in the Kospen programme at Long Urun. They are Rumah Udau Tedong with the Penan as host, Rumah Jangan Bunyi (Penan), Rumah Besi Janea (Penan) and Rumah William Eric Usang (Kenyah). Thirteen volunteers were also trained as agents to ensure the smooth running of the programme in Long Urun.

Belaga Kospen chairman Hubong Uyo, who is also the Belaga Kemas officer, stated that the programme would train volunteers to engage 25 villagers in the district for the event.

Meanwhile, PRS Belaga Youth chief Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said that 110 new party members were registered during the programme at Long Urun, with more expressing interest to join.
