SPM top scorers want to become doctors

SIBU: Jason Lau Pick Hook of SMK Sacred Heart is happy his sacrifices paid off by him obtaining 10A+ and 1A in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), the results of which were released yesterday.

Jason said he was under pressure to emulate the results of his two academically-inclined elder sisters both pharmacists.

Overcoming the first hurdle, he became the toast of the school by scoring A+ in Bahasa Malaysia, Moral Studies, History, Additional Mathematics, Accounts, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Chinese; and A in English.

Jason’s ambition is to be a doctor.

“Since young, I have often heard my grandmother complaining of illness so I hope to become a doctor to provide the necessary treatment to people who are ill,” he said.

The 18-year-old admitted it had never crossed his mind that he would garner 10A+ and 1A as he was not a top student in class.

“I was usually in third position, losing out to my two more capable friends; so I was quite surprised when the results were announced.”

Jason is grateful to his teachers, saying: “They were always so helpful and willing to conduct extra classes every morning. I must admit that without their sacrifice, there is no way I could get such results.”

Top student of SMK St Elizabeth, Sophia Lau Yee Hui was also on cloud nine for her outstanding results.

She said she had to put in a lot of hard work, going for tuition classes and striving to excel.

Like Jason, Sophia aims to become a doctor.

“I will apply for the programme at a private college,” she said.
