LAHAD DATU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee has expressed regret over the murder of his nephew here on Sunday.

“I am disappointed because the deceased was a good person and friendly to everyone,” said Yong, when commenting on the death of restaurant owner Darren Kong Thau Chin.

The 37-year-old victim was hacked to death by the cook of the restaurant who was reportedly dissatisfied over his salary.

According to Yong, his nephew was a good and thoughtful boss. The suspect had been working as a cook for four years and had never caused any problem before.

It is understood that whenever the suspect faced financial problem, the victim would help him.

“I still cannot believe that this could have happened because he (suspect) was well liked by his employer. On the day of the incident, he was given a surprise by his employer as it was his birthday.

“He was so happy with the surprise that he went to buy food for his employer,” Yong said when contacted yesterday.

Yong, who is a former chief minister, praised the efficiency of the police in detaining the suspect within an hour after the incident and finding the murder weapon.

He hoped the suspect would be given the appropriate penalty.

Kong succumbed to injuries after he was slashed repeatedly on the head, neck and hands by the 38-year-old Filipino when he confronted him about his salary.

A heated argument reportedly broke out and the suspect whipped out a cleaver to attack the victim.
