KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will draw up a new policy soon on the placement duration for its officers and other personnel at the country’s border areas.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said today that a restructuring was needed for the purpose of close monitoring of these personnel in future.

“Those sent out to the border and sensitive areas cannot be stationed there for too long, otherwise the syndicates with vested interests will take advantage.

“To avoid their temptation of being involved with such syndicates, we will draw up a new policy on the placement duration for our officers and staff at the border areas.”

Noor Rashid said this in response to the suggestion by Kedah police for the placement of police personnel at the Malaysia-Thailand border be restructured to avoid abuse of power by condoning the smuggling of petrol and diesel.

Earlier, he had launched the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department’s Carnival at the federal police headquarters, Bukit Aman, here.

“Such a restructuring is relevant to avoid malpractices that could hurt the PDRM’s integrity,” said Noor Rashid.

On Tuesday, 11 police personnel were detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to assist in its investigation into the smuggling of petrol and diesel at the Malaysia-Thailand border.

This brought the total number of personnel arrested since Monday to 26, including a former Anti-Smuggling Unit commander, in Bukit Kayu Hitam, and two members of the public.-Bernama
