KUNAK: A special integrated operation to round up illegal immigrants led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) was launched in this district yesterday.

ESSCom public action director Wan Mohd Khalid Wan Kamal said ten state and federal government law enforcement agencies took part in the operation at the water village, market and Kunak town.

“We will continue to carry out the integrated operation.

“Apart from detaining the illegal immigrants, we also want to track and arrest those who commit illegal activities such as illegal hawking and smuggling subsidized goods to neighboring countries,” he said after a briefing by ESSCom field officer DCP Md Safri Bin Man at the Kunak police headquarters yesterday.

Wan Mohd Khalid said the operation was earlier launched in Tawau, Semporna, Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

He said the drastic measures were taken following the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants in Sabah and the directive of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who is also chairman of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone, to launch a large-scale operation to round up the illegal immigrants in the state.
