TAWAU: Statistics from Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) showed that over 20 squatter colonies in the district are actively stealing electricity through illegal connections.

In a recent operation conducted together with the Energy Commission at Mile 4 Apas Road in its efforts to combat illegal electricity connections in squatter areas, over 50 squatter houses were checked for allegedly making illegal connections.

These illegal activities also contributed to the occurrence of frequent power interference in the surrounding areas.

Previous operations conducted also saw the seizure of various types of wire cables estimated to weigh between 50-100 kg every time an operation was done.

The wires are believed to be used by unscrupulous individuals to make unsafe illegal connections, which are dangerous to the public.

Offenders can be convicted for theft of electricity under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 which provides a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years or both if found guilty.
