KUALA LUMPUR: A Bangladeshi tourist was sentenced to 18 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to molesting a 42-year-old female traditional medicine practitioner.

Arifuj Jaman, 28, was also ordered to be given one stroke of the cane by Magistrate Ashraf Rezal Abdul Manan.

According to the facts of the case, Arifuj touched the victim’s posterior twice, while she was walking alone past a shop at Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin and at a bus stop in Dang Wangi at 12.30 pm on Feb 18. Earlier, counsel Ahmad Fairuz Arsyad mitigated for a non custodial punishment, saying, his client did not commit the offence on purpose and also needed to return to Bangladesh immediately as his travel pass had expired.

However, deputy public prosecutor Nor Diana Nor Azwa urged the court to impose a jail term as a lesson to the accused for causing fear and shame to the victim. — Bernama
