MIRI: Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling highlighted on the need for Miri to have another parliamentary seat to serve the southern area.
Speaking to Borneo Post after attending an Election Commission’s (EC) public hearing session at Mega Hotel here yesterday, Ling said it was logical for Miri to have another parliamentary seat as it had registered about 99,000 voters.
“The EC has violated the provisions of the constitution with the proposed electoral divisions as the number of voters is too far larger than the average number of voters in Sarawak, which is 35,779 voters for parliamentary and 13,526 voters for state seat.”
P 219 Miri parliamentary has 74,132 registered voters spread over three state seats namely N 73 Piasau (21,343 voters), N 74 Pujut (26,532 voters) and N 75 Senadin (26,257 voters).
Ling also requested that the EC gave consideration to change the name Piasau to give it a more suitable name.
He explained that the greater Piasau area, which comprised Piasau Industrial Estate, Piasau Garden and Piasau Utara, had been placed under Pujut constituency since its creation in 2006.
“The name Piasau is both misleading and confusing. Piasau consists of the city centre, Kampung Lereng Bukit, Kampung Haji Wahed, Lutong and Pulau Melayu.”
“With the new re-delineation exercise, the EC has proposed to include Tanjong and Luak (now under Senadin) into Piasau. The suitable name should be Miri Centre.”
