IPOH: The Sessions Court here has fixed June 10 for the trial of Perak former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin who is accused of criminal defamation against Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Judge Norhayati Mat set three days for hearing when the case was brought for re mention today.

The Perak opposition chief and Changkat Jering assemblyman, 59, is accused of slandering the prime minister in a public speech at Taman Desa Pakatan here between 9 pm and midnight on April 23, 2012.

He faces Section 500 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Last Jan 13, Mohammad Nizar, who is also Perak PAS Commissioner 1, was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.

Judge Rihaida Rafie had allowed a preliminary objection by the defence, and ruled that the complaint in the case was defective and unacceptable because of the confusion over who actually made it.

However, the following day on Jan 14, Mohammad Nizar was charged again with the offence but pleaded not guilty. -Bernama
