Police engage Labuan community to resolve issues

LABUAN: A police programme to engage the community has resulted in the people highlighting three major issues for immediate resolution on this duty-free island – drug abuse and trafficking; traffic congestion and crime.

Labuan Police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said today the police would accord priority to these issues.

The engagement programme was held at the Labuan Sentral Market yesterday and involved 16 police personnel and three government officials.

Adzhar told Bernama in a statement that the drug issue represented a serious risk to security, public health and the well-being of young people in particular.

“Therefore, there is a need for a serious focus and constant efforts in bringing drug abuse and illicit trafficking under control with the aim of achieving a society free of drug abuse,” he said.

Adzhar said the traffic issue would be raised with the relevant authority, with the close cooperation of the traffic police.

“The engagement programme has enabled us to have a better knowledge of the people’s concerns and expectations,” he said.

At the programme, 35 newly-registered ‘Rakan Cop’ members joined the police preventive squad.-Bernama
