SEBAUH: Nicholas Ting Shiuh Yang, who emerged as the best student in SMK Sebauh with 10A’s in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2014, has revealed his formula for others to emulate.

“After school hours, I’ll do my revision from 3pm until 5pm. After that I spent my quality time with sport activities and reading,” he said, emphasising that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’.

In overall results for last year’s SPM, the school achieved 73.6 per cent passing and scored an average grade (GPS) of 6.33.

Among other excellent students who scored 3As and above were Alex Tan Che Xin, Jeshielton Ray Nicolas Changing, Voon Lee Sing, Cecelia Claudia Randi, Lorraine Nasha Aki, Masliana Abdullah, Madelyn Jayok, Mega Jawan, Ester Samban Bagok, Karen Lee Hsiao Ping, Chundy Mathiew, Tan Suet Ling and Peter Sageh Nila.

Meanwhile, in revealing his secret to high achievement, Ting said memory work was not the key in revision but rather to understand the subject.

“Only by understanding the subject, then the knowledge will be useful and can be applied,” said Ting.

For History and Moral Studies, he said it is important to make notes and keep on reading it — repetition.

For Science, he said revision is needed to get familiarised to the type of questions and for language subjects, it was imperative to read books, newspapers and watching television being the best approach for him so far.

“You must read all your notes and please don’t do any last minute study,” he advised.

According to him, while doing revision sometimes he felt the pressure and would stop for a while and listen to music.

“Study hard, play hard, believe that you are the best”, said Ting who aspires to be a dentist.
