KUCHING: An elderly man was lucky to escape serious injuries after he was hit by a car, driven by a youth who claimed to have lost control after another passing motorist flung a lit firecracker into his vehicle.

In the 9pm incident on Thursday near a condominium at Jalan Petanak here, the 60-something motorcyclist was about to leave the premises after dropping off his son, who works as a security guard at the complex, when a car with four youths inside went out of control and struck the complex’s concrete perimeter wall before knocking down the elderly, who suffered cuts on his face and arms due to the impact.

The driver, who also sustained cuts on his face, claimed that he and three male cousins were heading to Petanak Market for supper when an unknown passing motorist threw a lit ‘air bomb’ firecracker into their car.

In his haste to throw the firecracker out before it exploded, the 20-something driver lost control of the car and crashed into the elderly motorcyclist.

The other three car passengers were unhurt.

Both the car driver and elderly motorcyclist received outpatient treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.

In a separate case, a senior citizen was injured after crashing into a monsoon drain at Sejingkat near here around midnight.

The 77-year-old from Kampung Sudat was riding his motorcycle alone when he lost control of it and plunged into the drain.

Residents nearby came to his aid and called an ambulance.

He was brought to Sarawak General Hospital later.
