Kazakhs storm into JDC quarterfinals

KUCHING: Kazakhstan hammered Lao PDR 3-0 in Group A to record their second win and book their place in the quarter-finals of the Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Competition at the SLTA tennis centre yesterday.
The top seeds had Rodion Pak blanking Bousone Khouchamlong 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles in 42 minutes but Beibit Zhukayev was made to sweat hard by Sataporn Simmalavong before winning 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in the second singles.

Rodian and Iliya Taranin had no problem in beating Bousone and Samsanouk Latsafangthong 6-1, 6-1 in the doubles. Despite the defeat, Lao still qualified for the quarterfinals as they finished second in Group A and they will face third seeds Syria today.

Kazakhstan’s quarterfinals opponents are sixth seeds Yemen and the winner of this tie shall face either fourth seeds Pakistan or Sri Lanka.

The other quarterfinal match is between second seeds Vietnam and fifth seeds Turkmenistan.

Vietnam made the last eight after beating Sri Lanka 3-0 yesterday for their second win to top Group B.

In the Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Competition, on form fourth seeds Pacific Oceania swept aside Kyrgyzstan 3-0 to finish on top of Group A with three wins.

They next face Iran in the semi-finals today while the top seeds Singapore are also in the semi-finals after chalking up their second win 3-0 over Turkmenistan in Group A.

The Singaporeans will contend with second seeds Sri Lanka who thumped Lebanon 3-0 yesterday.

In the play-offs for fifth to eighth placing, Kyrgyzstan will play Lebanon while Turkmenistan are up against the under performing third seeds Pakistan.
