SIBU: A lorry carrying tiles caught fire at the traffic lights at Pedada Road here yesterday morning.

In the 11am incident, the 27 year old driver, who smelt something burning, and his attendant abandoned the vehicle after seeing smoke coming from the engine section. A witness tried to douse the flame with a fire extinguisher obtained from a petrol station nearby.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel put out the fire and prevented it from engulfing the lorry. Police were at the scene to control traffic.

It was learned that the lorry was delivering tiles from Mile 14, Oya Road to a customer’s house at Brooke Drive when the incident occurred.

A short circuit at the engine was believed to have caused the fire.
