MIRI: Muslims throughout the world are appalled by the extremism and cruelty displayed by the group calling themselves Islamic State, contrary to the teachings of the Holy Quran which promote peace and moderation.

Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said their barbaric acts, such as beheading, sickened him and like-minded Muslims.

“As a Muslim, I can’t bear to watch such cruelty and that is not Islam and even Muslims are fearful of these extremists,” he said in his speech as guest-of-honour at the Lawas Chinese Associations Chinese New Year gathering at Lawas Indoor Stadium on Sunday night.

As stressed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, he said such acts and behaviour should not be allowed to penetrate into Sarawak.

“We want peace, solidarity and prosperity and for that, we must have security and harmony in a united Sarawak,” he said.

On the Chinese community in Lawas and the state, he said the government recognised their enormous contribution to the state and its economy.

He urged the community in Lawas to continue to be united and give their support to him as their elected representative.

Awang Tengah’s wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Paulu Gumbang, Limbang Resident Maria Hasman, Lawas district officer Hussaini Hakim, organising chairman Penghulu Dennis Liaw Choo Tien and Temengong Ang Kheng Su were among those present.
